Established in 1958, Bobbin was the industry’s first and longest continually published sewn products manufacturing magazine. Its subscribers included apparel and non-apparel firms – from men’s tailored clothing to ladies’ sportswear to home domestics – from around the world.
When he retired from Bobbin International in 1998, Publisher and President Emeritus Manuel Gaetan donated his personal copies of the award-winning magazine to the University Libraries. His collection includes issues that were published during his tenure, which began in 1970.
These issues of Bobbin are now a rich resource for any scholar, inventor, student, professor or advertiser interested in the sewn products industry during that era. If you’re looking for information on such topics as threads, zippers, pressing equipment, fusing technology, and supply chain management during the 1970’s, 1980’s, and 1990’s, you can find it in Bobbin.
The Bobbin archive is held by the South Caroliniana Library, located on the University’s historic Horseshoe. Completed in 1840, the Library is the repository for South Carolina’s historical and literary treasures and is open to the public. It houses more than a million published and manuscript items, visual materials, portraits and statures, and oral histories.
All of the issues of Bobbin held in the library are housed in archival boxes and stored at the University’s state-of-the-art preservation facility. They are a permanent part of the Library’s special collections holdings and, although they are non-circulating, they are available to any library user by request. Librarians are available to provide assistance and ensure a successful research experience. The Library’s holdings of Bobbin can be searched for online at http://library.sc.edu.
